Who

Who

Long before this became a practice, it was a way of noticing. Inside companies, I could feel where a decision had really been made — not where the chart said it was made — and where trust had quietly stopped moving. I read the room beneath the room: who held weight without title, what was unsafe to say, where the structure an enterprise described and the one it actually lived had come apart.

My seat was usually labelled finance. The label was accurate and beside the point. The numbers were the official reason I was in the room; the real work was structural and human — seeing how authority, alignment, and atmosphere moved through the enterprise as one system, and where that system was working against itself without anyone able to say why. None of it had a title. Titles follow the org chart, and the work happened beneath it.

The perspective was shaped in two places: the academy and the company. A doctorate, and years teaching at MBA and postgraduate level; then years inside commercial and corporate roles, watching how enterprises behave under pressure as against how they describe themselves. I am as at home with a balance sheet as with the silence in a boardroom — and more often than not, the silence explains the balance sheet.

A family enterprise is never only a rational system. It runs on emotion and loyalty, on identity and inherited history, and anyone who reads it honestly from the inside will see things that, in careless hands, could wound. What matters in the person doing the reading is the instinct not to reach for a villain — to sit inside real complexity and let it stay complex. Motherhood sharpened that: the plain knowledge that people are rarely as simple as the role they occupy. Seeing clearly is never for the sake of exposure; it is to give the people inside a system the sight of it they have not had.

What I bring an enterprise is the ability to see a system clearly without reducing the people inside it — to make the hidden architecture visible, and return it in a form they can use. It is quiet work, and it is offered by introduction.
